The Land Trust Alliance and the Indiana Land Protection Alliance
invite you to join your land trust colleagues for

Nonprofit Law and Recordkeeping for Land Trusts

A One-Day Standards and Practices Curriculum Training

Wednesday, September 2, 2009
Fort Harrison State Park
Indianapolis, Indiana

Registration Closes Next Tuesday, August 25!<http://www.lta.org/recordkeeping>

What is the legacy you will leave for the next generation of your land trust? Will your records tell the story of the land trust, make certain the lands protected today can and will be protected tomorrow and ensure that your donors' wishes will be honored? Is the structure of your organization sound and does your land trust follow federal and state requirements for establishing and running a nonprofit organization? Come join your colleagues and learn about the legal requirements for operating a land trust and keeping good organizational and transactional records.

This one-day training will cover the key aspects necessary to ensure the strength and stability of your nonprofit organization. The first part of the day will cover what every land trust needs to know about nonprofit law, including the major requirements for maintaining charitable tax-exemption status. The second part of the day will teach you the importance of keeping not only good land and stewardship records, but also good organizational and financial records. A strong, well-managed recordkeeping system is the backbone of a healthy organization intent upon achieving its mission.

Our trainer, Jane Prohaska, is an attorney, executive director of the Minnesota Land Trust, experienced teacher, and author of the two books you will receive at the training: Nonprofit Law and Recordkeeping for Land Trusts, Volumes I and II. Please join Jane and your colleagues to gain essential information on legal and ethical aspects of running a land trust and how to properly keep the records to ensure the longevity of your organization.

This training is co-sponsored by the Land Trust Alliance and the Indiana Land Protection Alliance (ILPA), and is financially supported by the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust through the Indiana Land Trust Advancement Program.

There are no pre-requisites for this training, and it is intended for all levels.

Cost:
Because of generous support from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, this training is being offered for $65 per person to Land Trust Alliance and ILPA members, or $85 per person to non-members.

Each participant will receive a copy of the Land Trust Standards and Practices curriculum workbooks Nonprofit Law and Recordkeeping for Land Trusts: Volumes I and II. These books will be used during the training, and may be used as a future reference and a model for implementing important aspects of the topics that will be covered in this training.
