Dear Ohio Land Trusts and Partners:
I would like to introduce myself as the new Ohio Private Lands Coordinator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Partners for Fish and Wildlife program. Over the past eleven years, I have worked with private landowners restoring wetland, riparian, grassland (prairie), and oak savanna habitat for migratory birds and federal trust resources throughout Illinois and Iowa. As the new coordinator here in Ohio, I look forward to the challenge of developing a program that works with all of you to deliver science based restoration projects across the state. Since 2007 the program has restored or enhanced 1800 acres in Ohio and completed over 400 habitat projects since the late 1980's. I have worked, with much success, land trusts throughout Illinois and Iowa and the relationships that were formed allowed us to construct good habitat projects for trust resources and allowed the land trust and private landowners to further stewardship of their land.
For those of you unfamiliar with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Partners program, it is a results-oriented habitat restoration program that provides financial and technical resources to private landowners, municipalities, local and county governments, and non-governmental conservation organizations to improve habitat for wildlife. The Partners program can assist in wetland and grassland restoration, riparian and stream improvements, exotic and invasive species control, and other conservation related projects that benefit federal trust resources.
I invite you to visit our website at http://partners.fws.gov/ to learn more about our Partners program. If you would like to meet and discuss project opportunities or have landowners interested in conservation projects that need financial or technical wildlife assistance, please feel free to contact me @ (740) 670-5312 or kraig_mcpeek at fws.gov.
I look forward to meeting you and assisting in restoring Ohio's wildlife resources.
Kraig McPeek
